How FMGE Scoring Works

FMGE has 300 questions worth 300 marks. Each correct answer gives +1 mark. Wrong answers and unattempted questions score 0. There is no negative marking, so it always pays to attempt every question.

The pass mark is 150 out of 300, a flat 50% aggregate cutoff. There is no subject-wise minimum, no category relaxation, and no percentile system. General, OBC, SC, ST and PwD candidates all need 150 to pass.

Since May 2024, FMGE uses a time-bound section format: each 150-question part is split into three blocks of 50 questions and 50 minutes. Once a block closes you cannot return to it. The scoring rules are unchanged — only the within-exam navigation changed.

Actual per-session distribution may vary by about 2 to 3 questions per subject. General Medicine and General Surgery are the two highest-weightage subjects.

FMGE Pass Mark and Qualifying Criteria

The FMGE pass mark is 150 out of 300, unchanged since the exam's introduction. There is no percentile cutoff, no rank-based selection, and no reservation-based relaxation. Every candidate needs exactly 150 marks to pass, regardless of category.

Historical pass rates have ranged from around 10% to 32% per session, driven primarily by exam difficulty rather than any change in the cutoff. The December session consistently shows higher pass rates than June, likely because candidates have more post-MBBS preparation time.

India's Supreme Court has upheld the FMGE structure. While NExT, the National Exit Test, is legislated to eventually replace FMGE, no confirmed rollout date has been announced for foreign medical graduates. FMGE remains fully operational as of 2026.
